The Rocklin History Museum celebrates the life and history of the town of Rocklin, California. This town of Rocklin was a railway town, with querries and ranches, with humble roots that even survive today. The museum itself is in an historic house, which adds to the atmosphere of age and history that comes with visiting any museum. Inside the museum,you will find the tools of the trade, as well as the history of the immigrants who lived and worked the ranches and the granite quarry.
The Rocklin museum of history is operated by the Rocklin Historical Society, from the ancient cemetery to the few historic buildings that still remain.
The history surrounding the region is rich and versatile. Archaeological digs show evidence that there was Native occupation of the lands as early as seven thousand years ago. These signs of human habitation only adds to the depth of the culture of the region. The earliest known culture was the Nisenan, a clan of Natives that built their homes on the edges of the Rocklin streams that still exist even today. While the Rocklin History Museum does not inherently focus on these people, they were thought to have lived in the area over two thousand years ago.
For modern habitants, Rocklin’s real development occurred in the 1850s and onward, when the government authorized the construction of rail lines through the area. With a hub to work from, Rocklin prospered, and moved on to become one of the largest providers of stone and rail engines for the train boom that swept the United States.
As efforts to preserve Rocklin’s rich history continue, the Rocklin history museum is opened to the public for three hours each day. This allows tourists and residents to step back and consider the hardships and efforts that the previous generations did to make the town a success.
For those currently living in the Rocklin area, it is truly a town where the past and the present meet. While there are many modern aspects to the town, many of the old buildings remain, protected as historic landmarks for future generations to enjoy. The history museum, Rocklin is only the physical front for the work of the Society, who continues tirelessly to ensure that the past is recorded and present for all people to learn and enjoy.
The History museum has a vision to improve old town and encourage viable commercial development that takes advantage of Rocklin’s rich heritage.
